Now that I told you about my first answer, here is the second one: To the question who is the wise man?, the other answer is ‘’the one who sees the newborn.’’ it is amazing that in the beginning I took that newborn in its very common physical way. So much so that I decided to run to see a newborn every time that it was one not far. Only later did I realize that the newborn is that one thing that will take place tomorrow?. in other words being able to foresee what the future will give us.
If you add both answers and live by them, you may end up understanding what wisdom is.In the meantime, the dictionary will tell you it is the knowledge of what is true or right, coupled with just judgment. Few interesting synonyms of it are: sagacity, discernment, insight. W en I looked for more, I found circumspection, prudence and moderation . I had to stop for I am sure I made my point.
I am reminded a famous saying by Marcus Aurelius who went like this:’’ May I be given the strength to bear what cannot be changed and the courage to change what can be changed, but also the wisdom to distinguish one from the other’’. And here arrives Platowho comes to the rescue. He said : « The justice of intelligence is wisdom. The wise man is not he who knows many things, but he who sees their just measure.
I réalise that I often use philosophers to join me in dressing up my texts . Their words are certainly superior to mine and often to the point. We are privileged to have this luxury, so why not use it for the benefit of all. It was Umberto ECO who said in his Foucault Pendulum ‘’We are formed by little scraps of wisdom’’. That is rather original. But if I had my say, I will bring wisdom, clarity and holliness to a world to a world that desperately needs .
I found so many citations from several thinkers and I hesitated naming them all, although they are so true. One of them claims that learning from history is wisdom while Aeschylus tells us that Memory is the mother of all wisdom while Augustin of Hippo suggests that Patience is the companion of Wisdom.
Bertrand Russel, amongst so many others had this wise word: “ To understand the actual world as it is , not as we wish it to be, is the beginning of wisdom “ Isaac Asimov reminds us of how we are living today : ‘’ The saddest aspect of life right-now is that Science gathers Knowledge faster than society gathers wisdom.
As for a conclusion, these few words may add image to reality: We all know of Solomon divine wisdom in the case of the two women and the baby. I did like what two Rabbis of the Jewish Golden Years in Spain had to say: Rabbi Solomon Ibn Gabirol said : ‘’The beginning of wisdom is to desire ‘’ while Rabbi Abraham Ibn Ezra said: ‘‘’Wisdom is to the soul what food is to the body’’.
